K-Pop Meets Cantopop: New Musical Film Bridges Decades and Cultures

Phoenix Waters Productions and TE Creatives have announced K-Pop Out of Time, a cross-border musical feature uniting the U.K., Hong Kong and Korea. Set to begin filming this year and unveiled at the Hong Kong FilMart, the project pairs contemporary K-Pop energy with the golden-age sounds of 1980s Cantopop in a time-travel romance that foregrounds authorship and cultural legacy.

A Timeless Tale of Music and Identity

The film follows a present-day K-pop idol who faces accusations of plagiarism and is transported back to 1980s Hong Kong. There he meets and falls for the original songwriter whose song upended his career. Music drives the narrative, functioning as both plot engine and cultural bridge as the characters confront questions of ownership, influence and creative lineage across two influential Asian music movements.

Visionaries Behind the Project

Writer-director Bizhan Tong, who has earned attention on the festival circuit, leads the creative team. Producers include Charlie Wong and Everett Jenkins, with Wonil Cha and Rancho Lee serving as executive producers. The production teams describe the film as the start of a broader entertainment franchise with plans for live concert events and expanded IP extensions that will strengthen creative and commercial ties among the U.K., Hong Kong and Korean industries.

Industry Buzz and Cultural Impact

“We wanted to bring two worlds together emotionally, nostalgically and commercially,” Tong said, framing the film as both an emotional story and an opportunity to interrogate authorship. “It traces a historical arc between Cantopop and K-Pop at a timely moment,” added Everett Jenkins, noting the projects potential to attract fans across multiple markets while honoring distinct musical legacies.

K-Pop Out of Time positions music as a transnational language and a means to explore identity and legacy. Further casting announcements and production partnerships are expected in the coming months following its FilMart reveal.
