Bridging the Creative Skills Gap
The UK government, through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), has introduced the Discover! Creative Careers initiative to address a pressing challenge: many young people in the UK lack knowledge about creative career options. Research commissioned by the government highlights a significant gap, revealing that while nearly one third of young people aged 11 to 18 express interest in creative jobs, almost half report not having enough information about the skills required. This gap threatens the future talent pipeline in vital sectors such as film, music, media, and culture.
Discover! Creative Careers: What It Means for Young People
The campaign runs throughout November 1 to 30, designated as Discover! Creative Careers Month. It aims to reach young people aged 11 to 18 across key regions, especially in London and the South East. To effectively connect with its audience, the campaign uses diverse platforms including social media, digital advertising, and interactive games. These channels provide engaging content to raise awareness and inspire youth to consider creative roles previously unfamiliar to them.
Strong Industry Backing, Built for All
Discover! Creative Careers is supported by major industry bodies and companies, including CreativeUK, ScreenSkills, Netflix, and Channel 4. The campaign also features well-known ambassadors such as actress Angela Griffin who champion its message. A central part of the initiative is promoting inclusivity and diversity. It partners with groups like Black Creative Trailblazers to break down barriers facing young people from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, such as those from C2DE socio-economic groups, ensuring the campaign reaches all communities.
Your Path into Film, Music, Media & Culture
